Thoughts on Jaunty

Shownotes

Intro

Hey everyone, I hope all is going well with all of you and that you are gearing up for a great summer of Ubuntu freshness.  I've been playing around with Jaunty and so far I like.  Not everything was perfect as I explain in the podcast.  Forn one thing, I was unable to get Compiz going.  But eventually found a fix for it which I blogged about.  But, also, the laptop runs a bit hotter than usual, and believe me it isn't because I am a real power user with tons of apps running in the background.  There are several issues involved for sure that I am still investigating but I can live with the heat for now.  Just keeping my fingers crossed it doesn't ruin the trusty ol' laptop.  Well, I hope you enjoy the podcast and feel free to leave a comment or shoot me an email or even tweet me on twitter, bye.

Hardy Heron Release

25 Apr 2008
Posted by Harlem

Shownotes

So, the day we podcast (mind you this is a day mostly set in stone unless either me or Peter have something better to do...ahem) and the day the "most significant" Ubuntu release ever falls on the same day! Coincidence you say? Perhaps - I on the other hand prefer to think that the "most significant" Ubuntu related "things" are happening because some cosmic alignment of epic proportions is taking place. Hey folks, this is too good to make up so I'm going with it. Now on to the podcast, we experienced a little "technical" difficulty as Peter's connection dropped and the bandwidth allocation seemed to lower suddenly at the same time. This doesn't make for easy listening or editting for that matter. But, I believe everything turned out ok so I won't harp about it any more. After all, it's very rare to have a cosmic alignment and have everything go perfectly. We also tried to do live streaming through Talkshoe.com and I think we might have a lot of the kinks worked out and production should get easier with every passing episode. More on that later. Before I go any further I would like to officially announce the grand unveiling of the new Fresh Ubuntu Podcast Logo! Yet another cosmic convergence! It was designed using the most excellent open source vector graphics program called Inkscape, which makes life so much more easier since the latest release came out. Of course, as we mentioned in the podcast this is a rolling logo in that it could change as distributions are released, so look forward to that. So here is a picture of it:

Gutsy Round Table

Shownotes

I guess I shouldn't say much about this podcast and let it speak for itself, which I will. But, I do want to take the time to thank my guests on the show this week. So, a special thanks goes to Chess Griffin of the Linux Reality Podcast, David Yates of the Lotta Linux Links Podcast, and to Jason Watkins of Jays blog and guest host of In the Trenches Podcast. Thanks I had a wonderful time talking linux and really getting good frank conversation about Ubuntu and linux. There is an open standing invitation to each of them to join the show anytime they want (every week? Hehe). Well, that about covers it I will just stop here and let the podcast speak for itself.

Post Gutsy Hangover

29 Oct 2007
Posted by Harlem

Shownotes

I promise I will only post one more show about Gutsy....Really! This week we had to give our thoughts on our installations of Gutsy and how we like it. As we mentioned in a prior podcast that we were downloading and installing while we were podcasting. Well, this week we would like to give you our first impressions on Gutsy. Meaning, we want to let you in on what we liked and what we didn't like. We, not surprisingly, had a lot to talk about and the podcast is a little long. I think I clocked it at just over one hour. That is a new record for us breaking a previous record of 45 minutes. We cover the whole gamut of things one could cover in release segment from the interface and the login sound file to the writable NTFS drives by default. We also are critical about a few things, notably, why they left out the compiz manager. One last note, i didn't get any new music this week, it is all recycled so there you have it, the next episode in a nutshell. Oh, and one last thing, from the oops I did it again department, I pronounced asterisk incorrectly, should be pronounced asterisk not asterix:) I think Peter blogged about this, too. Oh well, such is life. Lastly, next weeks podcast we are going to have some very special guests, namely Jay Watkins from the "in the trenches" podcast and David Yates from the "lottalinuxlinks" podcast. Looking forward to that one. Here are the links mentioned on the podcast.

Gutsy Released

22 Oct 2007

Shownotes

Yes, I know it has been several days since the release of Gutsy Gibbon and I am finally coming out with the release episode of the podcast. What can I say? Well, first off, Peter and I were frantically downloading the new release, him during the podcast and I after the podcast. I mentioned that I was switching over to Xubuntu on my laptop ,and, I did, but quickly switched back to Ubuntu when I just couldn't handle the unfamiliarity. I will go back to Xubuntu perhaps mid-cycle so that more bugs can be fixed. My main problem was seeing other computers on the network. I fiddled around with it a few hours but couldn't get it to work so I decided it was in my best interest to put it aside for now and install Ubuntu. I have since done that and everything is back up to speed. I am interested in what you all have to say about the release so feel free to leave a comment in the blog, or you can send us an email to freshubuntu@gmail.org. Furthermore you can actually send a voicemail to 17752629332 if you have skypeout or gizmoproject with some minutes on it. Well, enjoy the podcast!

Well folks, it looks like progress cannot be stopped, at least not at Ubuntu-land. Tribe 2 has been released with some exciting new features, Compiz Fuzion, New Gnome, and New Firefox, just to mention a few. Here is the excerpt: Hello Ubuntu developers, welcome to Gutsy Gibbon Tribe 2, which will in time become Ubuntu 7.10. Pre-releases of Gutsy are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even frequent breakage.
