Thoughts on Karmic so far. How's it shaping up for you?
Peter: Love the new boot splash. Tilda was broken, but works again this morning. Yakuake is working fine though. VirtualBox install - so much easier than VMware ever was. Still can't convert my existing VMWare machines though. Tried using xclip - didn't work.
Pleasant surprise to see another podcast. Enjoy listening.
Ubuntu 9.10 is coming along nicely. Things are starting to come together now. The Software Centre if done right is going to have the biggest impact. I like to see it make easier for developers, hobbyists and commercial houses, to offer their software for easy installation on any Ubuntu version.
BTW: I use an Apple Mighty Mouse and the side scrolling now works out of the box in 9.10. It doesn't on my Ubuntu 8.04.
WINE users may not need to issue the command line commands for installing Evernote. I actually installed Evernote a few weeks ago on my Jaunty install and was able to install with just a double-click. As you said, Peter, WINE has become a lot easier to use over the years. I started using Evernote when Google dropped Notebook and the thing I love most about it is that I can use it across platforms and can use it anywhere (including my Blackberry or Windoze Mobile phone) thanks to its basis in the cloud. Offline notes sync right up!
A quick note on the discussion around Karmic's wallpaper-switching abilities: Yes, it's been available in Mac OS X for quite some time. Windows 7 now offers it. But, it's also been available in Ubuntu (and other flavors) for several years as well. I've used a package called "wallpaper-tray" (formerly known as wp-tray for 6.x and 7.x users) and it's available in the repos through a quick apt-get install wallpaper-tray or through your favorite GUI-based installer. You can specify which images you want to cycle through, pick an entire directory of images, and specify the frequency of the cycling! Windows (yes, we still use Windows at work) users can use a free program called WinWall to get the same effect.
Thanks for the query out to the public regarding an IR remote for Boxee. I've been using a wireless keyboard/mouse for the past week and so far, I'm liking it. I know Hulu is now offering a DEB package, but what I like about Boxee is that it does more than the Hulu client. Through Boxee, you can listen/watch local media along with streamed content. Hulu is included, but so are a wide-range of channels. Plus, you can configure your favorite Internet radio stations, through Shoutcast, last.fm or listen to Pandora radio (my fav). As I mentioned to you guys last week, I'm looking to fire my subscription TV provider and so far, this is looking like a winner. This could be a good item for a show!
I have to agree that in some ways VirtualBox is a great alternative to some of the other virtual machine programs out there, however I do have one major gripe with it.
Have you ever tried copying an existing VirtualBox virtual machine to another system or even copying it back to the original after a fresh install? So far, I have never been able to get this to work. It always comes up with an error complaining about the devices UUID and I end up having to reinstall the virtual machine (i.e., Windows XP) from scratch.
I have tried using the VBoxManage clonehd command process described in the manual and other online tutorials. I don't know if it is because I have snapshots, am just making some simple mistake, and/or if I'm just not understanding the whole process and thereby missing a step.
If you, Harlem, or Lefty have some time to try the cloning process yourself, and get it to work, I sure would appreciate a tutorial of the steps on an upcoming show or your website.
