Hey, another great episode is out and ready for consumption. First of all, I want to say thank you to Scott Ritchie who blessed us with his presence on thursday for a rockin interview with the WINE package maintainer for Ubuntu. And, just like Peter said, he answered questions even before we asked them so Scott made things easy for us. But, on an even better note, we now know the major advantage over a 1.0 stable release wersus the regular run of the mill point releases:) Have a good time with this episode and leave a comment for either me, Peter or Scott, see ya!

Well it is shaping up to be a fine summer since I haven’t seen a mid 50’s day for a week now. And, in Oregon that means summer is finally here. There really hasn’t been much going on with both Peter or myself. Peter has been on a media fast and I have been busy adjusting to my kids’ summer schedule so there isn’t a lot of news but we sure made up for it in banter and small talk. We did happen to catch up with Christer Edwards who talked with us about LoCo teams and their significance to the world of Ubuntu. He also went into detail about his tutorial site ubuntu-tutorials.com where you can find a number of great tutorials on any version of ubuntu dating back to Warty, I think. He was a great guest and very informative and we thank him very much for being on the show. He also happens to be on IRC chats rooms on occasion and goes by the handle Zelut, which BTW is also his twitter name and can be found at twitter.com/zelut. And last but not least is the MPM in which Peter describes the SORT command. Not much else to say except enjoy the show and the interview, Ciao!

This week we had some interesting news to cover and among them was the blueprint for the next release of Ubuntu dubbed Intrepid Ibex. Yes, it almost feels too soon but judging by all the work that goes into every release it couldn’t be soon enough. Of the things being touted in the upcoming release is the term “ubiquitous connectivity”, yes, wifi woes could be coming to an end very soon. And we can only hope and pray that this comes to pass. But, the main part of the program features an interview with Mike Basinger who kindly joined us for nice little interview about the forums and membership. Overall, Peter and I had a great time with Mike and mad for another great show. Thanks for listening in:)

There is not a whole lot to say here other than we had guest from all over the world come on the show and tell about their experience with Hardy Heron. Included in teh discussion besides Peter and I, were none other than good friend of the podcast Knightwise and Cafeninja, Jason Watkins, Chad Wolllenberg from the Linux Basement Podcast, and our good friend from the Ubuntu-UK podcast Alan Pope and Tony Whitmore along with folks from Canonical Jorge Castro and Mike Basinger. I think we could have gone all night talking about Ubuntu and the wonderful things it has done but the guys in Prague just couldn’t stay away from cave men:) See the restaurant link below.
*NOTE* - Holding off on the t-shirts until I get further clarification on the use of the logo:)

Geat podcast today and I truly wish I could do more podcasts like this, just plain old banter and verbal jousting. Maybe in the summer when I get really lazy:) So, here is a little background on the podcast. Initially we were going to have the roundtable this week, but it coincided with the Ubuntu Developers Summit which is taking place in Prague in what was formerly known as “Czechoslovakia” and currently know as the Czech Republic (okay so my forte is not world geography). However, the fellas joining us who were scheduled to join us for the roundtable did not receive the memo that we were postponing the show and joined in the fun anyway. And those folks were Alan Pope and Dave Walker of the Ubuntu-UK Podcast. They happily provided some useful banter and unusual insight on the news. As peter stated, it was the longest news segment ever but we both agreed that it was just a long banter session with a little bit of news tossed in for flavor. I will also have them along next week as well during our roundtable. so here are the links to the show and I hope you enjoyed the podcast.

Since the decision to fork Pidgin has been surrounded with some questions and perhaps a bit of controversy, we here at the Fresh Ubuntu Podcast decided it might be worthwhile to interview one of the developers of the new fork and get a few of our questions answered. So, we brought in Justin to ’splain a few things to us and get to the bottom of things. As usual, we also have a plethora of action-packed, thrilling, adventuresome news and a bevy of user feedback, not to mention Cafeninja’s MPM on the more command. All that and more fun with Peter and I and Galactic Overlord Candidate #1, oh and also the Peace Penguin. They’re coming out of the woodworks folks so stay tuned:)

It’s been a week now on since the release of Hardy Heron and the user reviews are pouring in! Lots of good feedback from listeners are providing me and the listeners as well about the tribulations and the pitfalls of the new LTS release of Ubuntu. Mostly positive feedback from my listeners but there was an undercurrent of surprise and even disappointment with the Ubuntu developers. Still, as always, I give them a bit of leeway on this. Just as my guest/co-host Jason Watkins stated in the podcast, “for what I pay for Ubuntu, I will cut them some slack and let a couple of things slide”. I, for one, agree and for the most part the issues will resolve itself in a matter of weeks if not days. Here are the links although not necessarily in any order so I must apologize in advance.

So, the day we podcast, mind you this is a day mostly set in stone (unless either Peter or I have something better to do, ahem) and the day the “most significant” Ubuntu release ever falls on the same day! Coincidence? Perhaps - I on the other hand prefer to think that the “most significant” Ubuntu related “things” are happening because some cosmic alignment of epic proportions is taking place. Hey folks, this is too good to make up so I’m going with it. Now on to the podcast, we experienced a little “teknical” difficulty as Peter’s connection dropped and the bandwidth allocation seemed to lower suddenly at the same time. This doesn’t make for easy listening or editting for that matter. But, I believe everything turned out ok so I won’t harp about it any more. After all, it’s very rare to have a cosmic alignment and have everything go perfectly. We also tried to do live streaming through Talkshoe.com and I think we might have a lot of the kinks worked out and production should get easier with every passing episode. More on that later. Before I go any further I would like to officially announce the grand unveiling of the new Fresh Ubuntu Podcast Logo! Yet another cosmic convergence! It was designed using the most excellent open source vector graphics program called Inkscape, which makes life so much more easier since th latest release came out. Of course, as we mentioned in the podcast this is a rolling logo in that it could change as distributions are released, so look forward to that. So here is a picture of it:

OK, Sorry that I am taking so long with the shownotes, it’s just that I put the podcast together last night and I just did’nt have it in me to write the shownotes. But, on the other hand this show doesn’t really need shownotes (I kid, I kid, lol). Not surprisingly by the title of the show we had a special guest on this week. This time we have an international guest who hails from “across the pond” as Peter put it, Alan Pope of the UBuntu UK podcast, among other things. We had a great time putting the show together and Alan made for a great interview and added depth to the news segment. Also, guess who called in with a suggestion and I’ll just reiterate it here, he’s looking for a tech-y, geek-y type job. Well, the links are below so enjoy the podcast.

I guess it is that time again, I wasn’t quite ready for it this time though. Don’t get me wrong, I was ready in the sense that I had all my articles and stuff I was going to talk about. I just wasn’t feeling like starting today, I was just sort of feeling blah as the title says. One observation I am seeing is that the show is coming along pretty good, seems to me that we are picking up more listeners every week, and we are at our highest subscribership to date. Which pleases me, but also worries me at the same time. Well, here is to more continued success in the future.

Well, I have officially lost count of the how many podcasts I have done but no biggie, I’ll just have to count them one of these days. So, it may be awhile:) Not much to say today other than we are now 100% more geeky with a brand new IRC chat room. We are talking old school, back to the Arpanet here! Check us out on #freshubuntu at freenode and we can now chat. Be seeing you.

Lots of exciting things going on the the world of Ubuntu this week, the beta is out and you can just about hear the bugs squashing that is going on and will be going til the release. I can say this that usually around this time of the release cycle that there is a lull in the news relating to Ubuntu which I like to think of it as the calm before the storm. So, instead of the usual news segment, we have a hybrid of sorts where we talk about links that we discovered since last week. I have also sprinkled in a few bits of news and announcements, namely the release of the beta which is old news since it was released last week. Better late than never I always say:) We also had a special guest this week who provided us with a “getting things done” primer. His name is Michael Ramm and can be followed on twitter. He talked to us about a few things we can do to start ourselves ont he road to GTD nirvana and pionted us to his blog Black Belt Productivity. He was a great guest, which most of my guests are and we were lucky to have him. Well, I will let you go to peruse the wonderful links that we have gathered, have a good week.

So, it was suggested to me from a listener to make on of the freely downloadable and high bitrate mp3’s from Nine Inch Nails. And, I must admit that the thought of doing that did tempt me! Then I got to thinking, which doesn’t happen too often, podcasters from around the world are probably doing just that this entire week! Basically, I would be following the crowd! Instead, I have decided to use another one of Scott McGrath’s theme songs that he generously sent to us and use it as the theme music for the rest of the year! Scott has done an excellent job at getting the essence of they type of music I like and balance that with the attitude of Fresh Ubuntu! Well done Scott, and thank you for allowing us to use you work. I did, BTW, download some of the new Nine Inch Nails music, although the free version, and I liked the sound. Again, I am not the biggest fan of their type of music even though I grew up with Nine Inch Nails! I did want to support them in the only way I knew how to and that was to show that there was demand for online music AND that the distribution method was the most democratic, least hassle, pro-artist, anti-racketeering way to do it. It was, in short, what I call a REAL “win-win” for the artist and the consumer. The band not only got great publicity but won over the on-the-cusp fans like me. I am not sure how much money they made from sales of their various packages but if you subtract the cost of customary distribution methods, i.e. Cd’s and even iTunes, I’d be willing to bet they did alright. Let’s face it, besides producing the masters and digitizing most of the real work has been done and since it was distributed on bittorrent networks there were relatively zero server costs unless you wanted to get other special priced packages. Well, enough talk, enjoy the podcast, featuring the ever-present news segment and a man page minute.
