Shownotes

Here is the 3rd podcast of the new year (2008) for those who have been following. This week we/I took a look at the ASUS EEE PC and gave a small, but, I believe a semi-thorough review of this tiny little PC with a lot of heart.
To summarize, I started off with a review of some of the features of the machine and went in depth into the startup and boot up process. I didn't mention this in the podcast but I did a little test of my own to see what the boot time was compared to Vista. And to my surprise, the boot up procedure of the ASUS was roughly 30 second from pushing the start button. Now this varied according to God knows what as I started it up 3 consecutive times in a row and got some minor fluctuations in times. The second time I booted it up I saw that it took roughly 10s longer but by the third time it was back down to the original startup time of 28s. The shutdown took on average 18s without a lot of fluctuation in the process. Other than that I give you a sneak peak at the user interface and some of the delightful things you can do with this PC. I tested the 4GB model but they will soon be out if they aren't aleady with a 8GB model. One thing for sure this little machine can use is a little bigger drive but then again it would add to the price. Overall, I gave it two thumbs up. Meanwhile, we talked about the latest happenings in Ubuntuland and Peter threw in a tech tip and script that he has been using to tweet on the command line. Pretty interesting stuff overall with a dash of new music for your enjoyment. Below is a list of the pictures and the various links that we talked about on the show. Cheers!

Shownotes

Alright, the second Fresh ubuntu Podcast is out and this time we had a friend of the podcast that dropped by to give his two cents on a few of the topics. Thanks kyle for dropping by and giving us a hand on some of the news items and I thought you did a great job rounding out some of the issues. We certainly had a lot of topics to cover and a couple of segments that were added to make this an especially long podcast. WE touched on many things during the podcast and among them were items of interest to both Peter and myself. Some Google news, Dell coming out with a ne Ubuntu computer (not available in the USA) and Wubi installer again. Heck, we even talked about Microsoft on a couple of issues, one about MS relenting of the virtualization within Vista, and the other about an upgrade path from Vista to possibly another brand new or should I say re-branded OS. I think Jason Watkins might want to get on the next podcast to add his thoughts on the whole issue. All in all, the links are at the bottom, and I hope that you get a chance to click on a few of them to find out some background on what we were talking about. Since this is the second podcast without editting, Kyle brought up the point that if we had never mentioned the fact that I quit editting in post he never would have given it another thought. I guess I made mistake number one, which is, don't mention any flaws as it may not be an issue anyways! Live and learn. Yet, on that note, the New Years resolution is holding up and I think I am getting a better handle on how the podcast will segment. It should get better as time proceeds, I hope. One issue that I have been trying to get around is this electric interference "hum" that tends to show up on the recording that I end up remooving via Audacity Noise Removal effect. It is a lifesave for sure, but, me being the semi perfectioinist that I am, I prefer not having that hum altogether. It seems to be an issue with the new laptop that I am using to record that podcast on but I am not able to pinpoint the problem. It could be the wires that I am using to connect to the laptop or it could be the laptop itself. I may end up having to by new wires which isn't too bad but then again it just may be an inevitable consequence of the electronics in the laptop. Further research in this area should be undertaken to resolve this problem, where is Scotty from Star Trek when you need him? I guess if you want somthing done you gotta do it yourself. Enough of my rant, hope you enjoy the podcast.
