More About Me...

Hi, my name is Harlem and this is the companion website for the Fresh Ubuntu Podcast. I am the host of the show and along with my co-host Peter, we do a somewhat weekly account about anything that has to do with Ubuntu. Thanks for dropping by the site. Feel free to have a look around and click on some of the great links on the site. Enjoy!

Another Tid-Bit...

One last thing - I started the podcast in July of 2006, and we have been going strong since then. Initially, it started as my first forays into linux, but now has grown up a bit by delivering the best news, how-to's, and tutorials - all with a bent towards the Ubuntu distro. Subscribe for free using iTunes or other podcast receiver. Thanks again for dropping by!

Fresh Ubuntu Wallpaper From the Screencasters!

Well, I feel validated today. I have a listener who sent in a very nice present for listeners of the show and it’s not even Christmas yet! Richard, one of the fellas who bring us great tutorials about Inkscape, sent me some very beautiful cutomized wallpaper. They are rendered at 1280X1024, go ahead and download them at you leisure and let me know how you like them by sending me a comment or leaving a message on my Grand Central button on the right or leaving a message on my Skype Voice Mail under freshubuntu. Here is a look at the artwork below:)

Grand Central Call Button

I had the good fortune of receive an invite to Grand Central from Google. This was pretty quick considering that I just asked them to reserve a number a few days ago! Thanks Google, first for a fairly decent mailbox and now a new phone number! The concept is simple, the big “G” gives you a phone number from any one of the contigious 48 states of your choosing and when people call that number Google will ring any number of phones which you list on your profile all at once. Meaning, if you are at work, home or on the road with your cell people can get a hold of you or at least get a message to you within minutes. There are plenty of features to play with from recording your own away messages to spam blocking which I like the idea of. One other feature that intrigues me is the Webcall button that you see on the sidebar that looks like a crumpled up piece of paper. Now listeners may call and leave messages to me! Yay! Just another way of making the site a bit more interactive, I guess. So, if you have a message for me here is what you do:

  1. Click on the Webcall Button
  2. Enter your name or pseudonym
  3. Enter your phone number
  4. Make sure you have the phone that corresponds to the phone number you entered
  5. Then, your phone will ring.
  6. Answer your phone and wait til the voicemail system picks up
  7. Leave your message!

That’s it! Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • Use a cell phone with a lot of minutes or free long distance as I don’t know if it will cost you a few pennies to leave me a message
  • Be polite and SFW, it’s always good policy.
  • Be creative.
  • Leave a tip for Fresh Ubuntu listeners. Best way to get on the show!
  • Well, if you can think of anything else send me a message and if it is interesting enough I’ll put it on the show. I hope to be hearing from you, bye for now:)

Thanks

I want to take up a little online space just to say thanks to all who make this podcast a reality. It isn’t easy trying to balance work, family, podcasting, and other activities in this day and age. So, I first want to thanks my wife and kids who have been very patient and loving through all the hectic-ness of my podcast schedule. I want to publicly thank my new host for agreeing to co-host the show, Peter, who has been a welcome addition to the podcast. We are growing at a much faster clip since Peter has come on board, but, also the podcast has never sounded more interesting since his addition. I also want to thank Tim B. who helped me get into the Ubuntu Live Convention for free and also was directly involved in getting the podcast an interview with Mark Shuttleworth, Jono Bacon, and Gerry Carr. We’ve also done some remotes at the Free Geek Center for a segment to the podcast also thanks to Tim. Thanks you to the guest who have been kind enough to participate. In order of appearance, Mark Shuttleworth, Jono Bacon, Gerry Carry, Chess Griffin, Dave Yates, Jason Watkins, Scott Willtsey. You have sprinkled the podcast with flavor and have givien the podcast much needed boost in confidence. Lastly, I want to thank my listeners for helping make this podcast what it is. Thanks you for listening, and being an active part of the Fresh Ubuntu Community. I am looking forward to what the coming year has in store for the podcast and I am enjoying every bit of it while it lasts. God Bless you, and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Update on Fresh Ubuntu

So now that the summer is winding down I just want to ready everyone for the continuation of what I believe will be a year to remember. Also, the site got “Stumbled” and sent a lot of traffic my way, so I want to thank the “stumblers” who stopped by and took a look at the site and podcast. I know it had a long way to go, which is what I will be doing in the coming months. I am hoping to build on the strengths of the site and podcast. I am also bringing in a couple of folks to the podcast and to the blog. You might have met one already, his name is Tim, and he has been doing some of the photography and recording. The other is Peter who lives on the east coast and is a computer consultant by day and was initially involved with another podcast called the MacNu podcast. It has since pod-faded and so he decided, with my prodding, to join my podcast with his own segment called “Man Page Minute”. I am looking forward to what the year has in store for us. Look for bigger and better things to happen on The Fresh Ubuntu Podcast this year.

Back to school

You now might be wondering about the show and why there hasn’t been one for awhile. Well, partly my fault, I was waiting for my kids to go back to school so that I could do the podcast and still have my kids recognize me. Now that they are back in school look for a more regular schedule. My goal is to have at least two to three episodes per month whether it is just me by myself or with my friends. Hopefully they will feel the same way but I understand that we all have lives to live. I do have a podcast abut Free Geek which is a beautiful operation in Portland, Oregon you have that to look forward to.

Okay, enough for now, I will be posting more frequently look forward to interacting more with the community int he coming year. Talk to you again soon.
